12 Injured, Including Medical Staff, in RSF Attack on British Hospital in Al-Obeid

The Sudan Doctors Network reported that 12 people, including five medical staff, were injured in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia on the British Hospital in Al-Obeid early today. The network described the attack as a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

On 28 February, at least nine people were killed and others injured in a previous drone attack by RSF forces on Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, which also destroyed warehouses of consumer goods and an oil production facility, according to local sources.

Al-Obeid has faced complex humanitarian conditions since the outbreak of war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF militia in April 2023. The city hosts a large number of displaced persons (IDPs) from Darfur and Kordofan, many of whom rely on the few functioning health facilities for essential medical services.

The network’s statement emphasized that the injured were performing their professional duties at the British Hospital when it was targeted. Some cases were described as critical, with the network calling the attack a clear violation of civilian and medical facilities serving a broad segment of the population.

The Sudan Doctors Network strongly condemned the attack, calling it a grave breach of international humanitarian law, which guarantees the protection of medical facilities and personnel. It warned that repeated attacks on health facilities could lead to a halt of medical services in Al-Obeid, which serves over one million displaced persons.

The network called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations to act urgently to ensure the full protection of medical facilities and staff, and to pressure RSF leadership to cease targeting civilian and medical infrastructure.
